Oil Spills

We use oil for many things. We use oil to power cars. We use oil to heat homes. We use oil to make plastic. But when oil spills into the ocean, it hurts animals.

Oil spreads quickly in the ocean. It sticks to everything, even birds and fish. Oil sticks to a bird’s feathers. The oil makes the feathers heavy. Many times, the bird can’t fly.

Some fish and birds eat animals or plants in the ocean. Sometimes they eat where oil has spilled. Then they also eat oil. The oil makes them sick.

When there is an oil spill, people try to clean it up. It is hard work. But it is very important!
