Chicken and the Egg

A lot of animals lay eggs. Chickens lay eggs. How are chickens hatched from an egg?

First, a mother chicken lays an egg. A mother chicken is called a hen. The egg has a shell that protects the chick as it grows. The growing chick gets food from the yellow liquid inside of the egg. The chick gets water from the white liquid inside of the egg. For many days, the hen sits on the egg. The hen uses her feathers to keep the chick warm.

Finally, the chick is ready to get out of the egg! It begins to poke holes in the egg shell. It breaks free! And over time, it grows into a chicken.
