Telling Stories Through Dance

Many Fijian people love to celebrate their culture! They like to dance and sing. One Fijian style of dance is called the meke.

Fijians dance the meke at festivals. The meke combines dance, song, and story-telling. Dancers tell stories about war, love, and more! They use the meke to tell the stories of the Fijian islands.

Fijians dance, chant, and clap during the meke. Most times, a person plays a drum. This drum is called a lali.

Many years ago, men and women danced the meke separately. Now, men and women sometimes dance together.
