Do you know what a commemorative coin is? “Commemorative” means in memory of. Commemorative coins help us remember and honor important American people, places, and events.

Some commemorative coins are made of gold. Some are made of silver. Commemorative coins are harder to find than normal coins. This is because the U.S. Mint only makes a certain number of each commemorative coin. People don’t usually use these coins to buy things. Instead, people keep them.

Sometimes, people buy commemorative coins for lots of money. For example, people might buy a $5 coin for over $400!
